Obesity Results
Ideal Protein Results Presented at Cleveland Clinic and National Obesity Conferences
Findings Show Safe, Rapid Weight Loss and Lower Risk Factors for Heart Disease, Diabetes with the Ideal Protein Protocol
Gatineau, QC. (December 1, 2014) - Findings of an analysis of 233 patients on the Ideal Protein protocol over 12 weeks were presented recently at the 9th Annual Obesity Summit at the Cleveland Clinic, and at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the National Obesity Society. The results show safe, rapid weight loss, and the reduction of risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Ideal Protein is a scientifically researched solution to safe weight loss with a four-stage, low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet. Currently more than 3,000 medical practitioners in the U.S. and Canada offer the Ideal Protein protocol to their patients to lose weight and reverse metabolic syndrome – the cluster of conditions that are pre-cursors to heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
“These findings are consistent with what we are seeing in our clinics with the Ideal Protein program, and it is gratifying to see these results validated by the scientific analysis of the data. The findings demonstrate that there is consistent weight loss, as well as improved lipid profiles for cholesterol balance and the reduction of other risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke,” said Dr. Tim Logemann, MD, the cardiologist who led the study. “As a cardiologist, I am always looking for ways to help my patients get healthier, improve their lipid profiles and reduce the risk of heart disease. The Ideal Protein protocol is a major tool that will help us accomplish these goals.”
“Our society is in the middle of an obesity epidemic, with skyrocketing rates of diabetes and heart disease – both of which are associated with obesity,” said Olivier Benloulou, president of Ideal Protein. “That’s why the Ideal Protein protocol was developed. Thousands of healthcare professionals are telling us that not only are their patients losing weight safely, but that they are improving their lab results. These findings presented at two major research conferences provide the validation for these reports.”
The two poster presentations are entitled Effect of the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method on Weight Loss and Metabolic Parameters and The Effect of a Very Low Carbohydrate Diet on Residual Dyslipidemia in Statin Treated Overweight Patients. Authors of the studies are Dr. Timothy Logemann, MD; David K. Murdock, MD, MS, FACC, FACP, FSCAI; Kelly O’Heron, RD and Adam Hoffmann.
Effect of the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method on Weight Loss and Metabolic Parameters followed 233 patients for 12 weeks on the Ideal Protein protocol. The data showed that patients lost an average of almost two pounds a week. Their lab results showed lower cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides and glucose readings during that time. The Ideal Protein protocol resulted in rapid weight loss and marked improvement in metabolic parameters in a short period of time.

The Effect of a Very Low Carbohydrate Diet on Residual Dyslipidemia in Statin Treated OverweightPatients followed 36 patients on the Ideal Protein protocol who were on statin therapy and who had residual dyslipidemias (imbalance of lipids and/or high cholesterol). Total cholesterol, non-HDLC and triglycerides all dropped, especially triglycerides which were reduced from 214 to 90. The Ideal Protein protocol showed a powerful effect on lipid abnormalities and can significantly improve the residual dyslipidemia in statin treated patients.

“Dr. Logemann’s results and their acceptance at such prestigious conferences is gratifying recognition of Ideal Protein’s ability to achieve safe, rapid weight loss and improve the patient’s health profile,” said Olivier Benloulou. “We are now working with cardiologists, physicians and healthcare practitioners throughout North America to bring this solution to more patients.”
Dr. Logemann commented, “While this was a relatively small study with exciting and encouraging results, we are looking forward to more research to further validate these findings.”

I finally had a chance to try some Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup (formerly called Heinz One Carb) and wanted to get as close as I could to creating a good copycat ketchup. My biggest stipulation was that I didn't want to have to cook my ketchup. I wanted it to be just as easy to whip up as my previous recipe. I think I've come pretty close to the Heinz. The main things that are missing in my recipe are the deeper, cooked flavor and the excess salt. I decided not to try and copy the saltiness since I thought the Heinz was overly salty. I used 1/2 teaspoon salt, but feel free to try up to a full teaspoon if you want yours to be as salty as the Heinz. I like the consistency and flavor of this version much better than my Better "Heinz" Ketchup. Adding tomato sauce made all the difference. Even if this isn't identical to the Heinz ketchup, I think it tastes very good and I'm happy with the flavor.
In case anyone is interested, I figured out one day that it costs about $.97 to $1.16 to make a batch of this ketchup. I have to pay an average of $2.00 for a 14 ounce bottle of Heinz low carb ketchup depending on where I buy it.
UPDATE 3/16/11: I made a few tweaks to the recipe this time. Except for the salt, I doubled all of the seasonings. I also added the equivalent of another tablespoon of sweetener. The recipe above still calls for the original quantities. I didn't edit it because the recipe is still good made that way. This time I simmered the ketchup on the stove for about 20-30 minutes and I think that helped blend the flavors a little better. It also helps the constency greatly. Cooking gives the ketchup a smoother texture and it doesn't separate and get watery over time like the uncooked version does. I do recommend covering the pot because the ketchup will get too thick otherwise.
UPDATE 5/14/12: To avoid confusion, I've edited the recipe ingredient list and instructions to reflect the way that I now make this recipe. I've also adjusted the nutritional counts.
Thanks to genaw.com for this great low-carb ketchup recipe!!!

Let sit a few minutes to thicken
Spray a non-stick pan with pam and spray inside your muffin rings
Put your pan with muffin rings on the stove and get it nice and hot, then pour your batter in to the ring. You do not need to fill them more than half way. This will make bottoms nice and crisp.
Once it has cooked and has a golden bottom (cooked on medium heat for approx 3 minutes) then flip over (ring mold included) and cook the other side for 3-4 minutes.
Let it cook on a cooling rack

Vanilla Cookies
1 Packet of Ideal
Protein Crispy Cereal (crushed)
1 Packet of Ideal Protein Vanilla Drink Mix--Do not use Vanilla Pudding or the Vanilla Pre--Made. This recipe is for the Vanilla Drink Mix. You can try the recipe with the Chocolate Drink Mix, and the Cappuccino Drink Mix. Remember, not pre-mades and not puddings for this recipe.
2 Egg whites
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon of baking powder
2 teaspoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon Torani Sugar Free Salted Caramel Syrup (made with Splenda). If you do not have this, use an extract you like with an optional packet of Splenda
Optional Cinnamon for top
Procedure:
This is so simple. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Wait a few minutes for the baking powder to make batter thicker.
Equally divide in 12 portions. I use a Wilton Whoopie Pie Pan, sprayed with Pam, which I purchased at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Bake in a preheated 350 oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from pan to cool and enjoy 6 cookies which equals one product. If you prefer, you can bake a cake from this batter as well--350 degrees for approximately 14 minutes.

Lately, it seems everyone is talking about Ideal Protein, the weight-loss plan du jour. It’s so popular you can even find Ideal Protein items on the menus of several area restaurants.
So, exactly what is this diet protocol and what makes it so popular?
“Ideal Protein is a weight-loss program that’s about losing weight and keeping it off,” says Melissa Martin, a registered dietitian and nutrition services manager at Woman’s Center for Wellness. “The diet works differently with each person, but it’s consistent in that dieters don’t plateau like they do in most weight-loss programs, and that’s great because we’re an immediate gratification society.”
Woman’s Ideal Protein protocol comes in four phases. The first phase targets your habits and behavior, and is followed until 100 percent of your weight-loss goal is achieved.
“It’s nutrition on autopilot,” says Martin, who has done the diet. “It’s very restrictive and allows you to change your behavior. You eat only vegetables, lean protein and Ideal Protein products. That’s when you really lose the weight”
Phase II, which lasts two weeks, increases food selections for lunch. The main reason for this weight loss is the body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis, she explains. Normally your body burns carbohydrates for fuel, but when you drastically cut carbohydrates, it goes into ketosis and begins to burn its own fat for fuel. And, Martin says, that’s another plus of Ideal Protein — it targets body fat and maintains muscle mass.
“Once you reach your goal weight and complete Phase II, then we re-introduce healthy carbs, fruits, dairy products that are part of a healthy diet in Phase III,” explains Martin. “Once you stabilize, we start talking about real life.”
Phase IV is maintenance, which Martin confesses is ten times harder than the weight-loss plan.
“Regardless of the program, there will be those that struggle with maintenance,” she says.
Sheila Talamo signed up for Ideal Protein at Woman’s when it first began offering the program and lost 35 pounds, but confesses she wasn’t a good a student.
“Inside of me is a happy little fat girl,” she says with a chuckle. “I’m always in search of a diet. I’ve gained and lost weight repeatedly through my 65 years.”
She says she only pretended to do the program’s different phases, “but I really didn’t follow the protocol. … I never planned for maintenance.”
She tried the program again, this time writing down the steps of her plan to make maintenance as successful as losing weight. “I’m a great dieter because I get real focused,” she says. “Then I thought, if I make my plan public, I might be more inclined to follow it.”
And that’s when her blog, “Little Fat Girl,” was born. “I do it not only for myself, but to share with others how I approach maintenance so we can all be successful,” says Talamo.
This time she lost 22 pounds, and shed 15 inches, dropping her body fat from 32 percent to 23 percent “which at my age is pretty good.”
Restaurateur Ruffin Rodrigue, 47, started Ideal Protein about three years ago after several of his buddies dropped significant pounds on the plan.
“I weighed around 306-307 pounds. I hadn't weighed that much since I played football,” says the former LSU offensive guard.
In the first six months, he lost 62 pounds.
“Actually for me, it was pretty easy,” says Rodrigue. “I enjoyed it. I got into ketosis fast; lost 17 pounds the first week.”
In the fall of 2011, Rodrigue says that while following the Tigers, he tailgated across the SEC.
“I gained a lot of the weight back, so I went back on the diet and lost it again,” he says. “I reduced my blood pressure 30 points … my waist went from a 42 to a 36. You’re not supposed to work out on Ideal Protein, but I did. The hardest part was stopping drinking (alcohol) because you can’t for the first three or four months.”
Rodrigue is determined to keep the weight off this go around. He continues to work out, watches his carb intake and liked the food so much he added Ideal Protein items to the menu at both locations of Ruffino’s Restaurant.
So, is there a downside to Ideal Protein?
“If you have Type I diabetes, are pregnant or have kidney/liver disease you should not be doing this diet,” says Kate Blumberg, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. “You need to talk to your doctor before you start … it’s a very low-calorie diet, and it cuts out a lot of nutrients.”
That said, Ideal Protein dieters are typically under a doctor’s or health coach’s care.
“Any plan that provides some sort of meal replacement is an easy way to control calories,” says Blumberg. “In the short term it’s a really good way to lose weight.

Cauliflower Wraps
Yield: 2 wraps
Ingredients
- Curry Wraps:
- 1/2 head cauliflower, cut into florets
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 tsp. curry powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- Garlic Herb Wraps:
- Substitute 1 minced garlic clove and 3/4 tsp. dried herbs (basil, oregano, thyme or a combo) for the curry powder
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a food processor, pulse the cauliflower florets until they form a crumb-like texture. Place the crumbles and 1/4 cup water in a saucepan with a tight fitting lid. Cook on medium high heat for 8 minutes, until tender.
- Drain the cauliflower in a sieve, then transfer to a clean kitchen towel. Firmly squeeze any excess water from the cauliflower. In a bowl, stir together the cauliflower and remaining ingredients. Form two thin circles on the parchment-lined baking sheets. With a spatula, press down the "dough" so it forms a thin layer. Keep the wraps compact--there should be no parchment showing through the mixture in any area of the wrap.
- Bake for about 17 minutes until dry and pliable. Gently remove to a wire rack to cool so the bottom does not become soggy. Use with light fillings or tear into pieces and use to scoop up fillings.
Notes
These delicate wraps are best served within a few hours of baking.
